I have been working at Dick's Sporting Goods part-time (more than an year)

Pros

-good part time job
- flexible hours and schedules
- employee discount program acceptable
- coworkers generally pleasant

Cons

- management that makes it very apparent the only thing they are concerned with is bottom line
- incredibly high turnover rate
- miscommunication between management and staff lead to scheduling disasters
- payroll cuts from higher management frequently make store incredibly understaffed. Staff is then asked to "do the impossible" with no time to do it
- no room for internal advancement

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- identify good employees in the company and reward them with promotions instead of hiring from outside the company
- increase payroll budgets. many complaints about the store arise from "no one to help" or "store was a mess," both of which could be solved with more associates available

I have been working at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with things that you love, selling to people who have similar interest. Comfortable uniform guidelines.

    Cons

Erratic scheduling, difficult tasking, ever-changing company policies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication through hierarchy (RVP->DM->SM->DM->Lead->Assoc is broken. Due to this, there is little to no accountability on the part of managers when things are done incorrectly. This leads to dissatisfied employees and an incredible turn over rate. Improving the flow of information would increase tasking productivity and selling revenues as employees would be better equipped for tasks, and thus given more time to assist and sell to customers. Also, better knowledge of stores selling patterns and it's customers would be nice. To give such limited payroll to stores that are not mall/shopping center locations hamstrings employees during open hours. Customers rarely want to "tire kick."
