I have been working at Dick's Sporting Goods full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Relatively flexible, depending on who your store manager is. Compensation is competitive, benefits are decent. If you work in a store that has historically produced good metrics, chances are you will be left to do your work and not bothered by upper management much.

    Cons

Upper management (outside of the stores) only see a snapshot of what is happening. They really only care about numbers (results) and often fail to give you applicable advice to accomplish tasks that seem insurmountable. Bonuses are weighted on certain metrics - overall sales performance counts, but it is certainly not the driving factor behind your structure (customer surveys are!).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out some of the micro-managing. Give more flexibility to the stores. Appreciate the constraints of productivity when management's hands are tied (i.e. - when you remove payroll from the stores, don't expect your management teams to feel obligated to pick up all the slack). Actually try to develop relationships with sales managers and sales leaders - if they respect you, they will work all the harder to produce for you!

    Pros

They know how they want their stores to operate. It's idiot proof. If you're willing to learn they can teach you.

    Cons

Not adequately staffed. Chances to move up seem slim. Pay is good starting out, but a decent raise is rare.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to keep productive associates there should be enough hours available to those who are hardworking. The main complaint I hear is that there aren't enough associates to help all of the customers.
