    I worked at Dillard's full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

You pretty much get to manage yourself. Being constantly doubted and questioned as the norm helps instill confidence and develop assertiveness. Was able to train people and coach them through their own bad experiences. I was able to move up quickly with pay increases through sustained outstanding performance.

    Cons

The worst company I've ever worked for. I repeatedly witnessed and was a victim of theft and every form of harassment (including sexual harassment) from management to tenured employees with no positive outcome when it was repeatedly brought to the attention of upper management. As long as you can sell, it makes little difference in the level of debasement you engage in on a daily basis. Upper management strives to beat down the employees' self-esteems to control an already negative situation with no sense of responsibility for their actions. They really know how to sell it as a great experience to work for the company and miserably under-deliver their promises. The company as a whole has 0 positive work culture or values, nor do they adhere to their policies and regulations set forth in their code of conduct and other published documents. Their is very little money spent on the training. As a result, expect to be thrown on the floor with a sink or swim approach to your work. Management across the board are poor communicators. Activities and events have little to no planning and are always executed in a rush, placing the responsibility on the associates. Adjusted goals for pay increases eventually become unattainable due to the lack of traffic in the store or area. Tenured employees retiring after 15-20 years receive little recognition unless they were popular with upper management. If not exceeding goals, you can walk into work one day, having rubbed someone the wrong way and be escorted out the building by security. Because of 0 management training, management guess their way through their jobs as well; Most are unable to manage most talented employees, resulting in a majority standard of mediocrity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in technology upgrades to maintain industry standards in customer experience; Work with external leadership and training/development consultants and accept their feedback with an openness and willingness to change; Restructure pay to make goals and bonuses attainable; Recognize your employees for their performance on a tiered system - any positive performance is to some degree worth appreciating
