Current Employee - Sales Associate in Saint Petersburg, FL

I have been working at Dillard's part-time (less than an year)

Pros

- 25% Employee Discount.
- Automatically qualify for a Dillard's Card, thus Cardholder privileges.
- Upbeat environment.
- Always someone to help if you have a question, it is comfortable in that sense.
- Fellow employees are fabulous.. outside of the sales floor.
- Good starting pay, if you can keep it.
- Flexibility in shifts, schedules are made available monthly so it is easy to schedule around.
- Much more sophisticated compared to Macy's, Penny's and Sears.

Cons

- Hourly sales goals are beyond unrealistic.
- Every few months you have a review. If you don't make your goal by a certain percent they can fire you. Just like that. No notice, just fired. Doesn't matter your position, how long you've worked there, or if you've always made your goals. If you have a bad review period you are gone. You're expected to "see it coming".
- Many employees break under the pressure and quit for fear of not making their quota, thus is it constantly either understaffed or has brand new employees who don't know what they're doing and will probably not even be there long enough to find out.
- Due to the extremely high sph goals walking onto the sales floor feels like being thrown to the wolves. Employees are savages and will do anything to keep their job.
- Part time has terrible benefit options.
- Minimum room for growth.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with employees, do not just fire them. Try to talk to people when you see something going wrong and stay up to date on everything. Being connected to your employees will help your store do well.

    I worked at Dillard's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

From the outside, Dillard's seems like a great place to work - smaller than Macy's and therefore one might think they value their staff more.

    Cons

Communication by management is infrequent and when it is received, it's usually negative. Most employees fear loosing their jobs - it's a topic of conversation daily. I have seen terrific employees fired and demoted with little or no reason given. Very little value of employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your stores - not by regionals, but by corporate from Arkansas. Too many regionals & store managers are removed from reality, stuffy and rude.

    Pros

Engaging customers. Good quality products, flexibilty in shifts, Management willing to talk if you have a problem. Nice and neat store environment, Sophisticated approach.

    Cons

Daily goals are unrealistic, and no matter how hard you try, if you do not reach them, you are out. Even employees who worked for Dillards for many years were fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage and dont just implement orders from the top.
