I worked at Discover full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Company-wide, the branded experience is preached through and through. Best marketers. Best brand marketers. User-centered design is preached through and through. Despite being a financial focused company, Discover has access to some of the best innovation UX design-wise.

Cons

Little to no focus on external multicultural efforts, or internal diversity programs. Some departments overwork their people, while others allow (and encourage) incompetence to stay and flourish. The priority on marketing leaves little room for back-end innovation, and marketers seem to make the "tech calls" when they are not qualified to do so. Can be clique'y.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen with your ears and with your hearts to what the unstated needs for your employees are. Some employees have great ideas that don't get past their managers. Create a more open, diversity-inclusive environment.

I have been working at Discover part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good for college students just wanting a part-time job then moving on to better opportunities. Management has been able to work with my school schedule but senior management has pulled some unscrupulous moves that even surprised me (I'm not one to be easily surprised). "Lifers" are those know to work for the company for a long time and most are nice. Pay can be good for amount of work involved to do job.

    Cons

Ethics are often pushed to the limits if not violated at this company, one only needs to google the company to see the litany of lawsuits against it and fines it has had to pay ranging in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Career opportunities are limited and are based on seniority/favorability vs. meritocracy, at least in the company's operations sites.

Experiences can vary from department to department and manager to manager, so basically you are rolling a dice. The company prides itself in being "innovative" so change occurs often which is not bad, but sometimes change occurs just for the sake of changing- sometimes change is not needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, Discover Card has its ups and downs, it's a pretty vertifical company. The mere fact that the company is known to be more bearacratic than Citi Group is well... a dubious award. Senior management is overall competent but has made a few blunders that raised a few eyebrows.

I have been working at Discover full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Treats employees great. Activities at work and after work. Giveaways. Encourage training and have have funds to back it up.

    Cons

Horrible decisions made by central office (Chicago) make work in other locations (Pittsford, NY) unbearable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You bought out our company/business (SLC) and made a super stupid move by keeping a product that you had developed by a third party (NorthStar) just because you did not want to retrain your minimum wage phone support personal. So you kept the developers for a product you discontinued (SLC) to support an entirely different and inferior product (NorthStar). You would have been better to keep the SLC product and retrain the minimum wage phone people. Now the good people have quit because they are frustrated by your incompetence.
