I have been working at Dollar General part-time (less than an year)

Pros

- Great starting pay with decent hours
- Opportunity for advancement in position
- Fast-paced
- Having only 8 employees makes it easier to remember names
- Awesome job to get yourself into the American workforce

Cons

- Too little time to do SOOO much work
- its not easy working with employees above you that do not perform as well
- pay should be performance based after first annual review
- sometimes telling management about problems with other employees does absolutely nothing
- no part-time key holder position; there should be one for those that perform exceptionally well but are not required to have immediate availability at all times like a regular key holder would.
- Very little recognition for good performance

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your sales associates more. We see everything as it happens and have plenty of good idea's to fix problems or improve the work flow in the store. Be considerate of the relationships between your employee's. They can get a bit sketchy sometimes and create serious problems. Lastly, change the VOID process back to not needing a key. It holds up the line and people get pissed off when i have to wait for the manager to come up to void it and if the manager is gone then we are left helpless with nothing to do except tell the customer that we cannot take it off. That will lead to an increase in refunds ( I know this first-hand).

I worked at Dollar General full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

paid weekly but not very good pay

    Cons

slave drivers, one of the worst companies to work for.. they don't pay for training or travel time. die from the heat in the summer months and freeze in the winter. Wrongly accuse workers of stealing, then tell them what to write and where to initial when they fire them....BULLIES

I have been working at Dollar General part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay raises consistently awarded on your anniversary

    Cons

    * Every employee is considered and treated as a common thief
    * Minimum wage regardless of employment history, education and skills
    * NOT an employee-oriented company -- far from it. Viewed and treated as slave labor.
    * There are no breaks allowed during shifts except a mandatory half-hour for a six-hour shift and an hour for an eight-hour shift. Then the (multi-billion dollar in sales) company doesn't have to pay you for taking a (albeit short) rest. And store managers are prohibited from leaving the premises for lunch and must be on-call during their lunch.

    * No perks, discounts and VERY limited (almost laughable) benefits
    * High expectations to be in three places at once and doing three things at the same time
    * No respect for family or holidays; and compensation for working holidays minimal. Most companies allow employees to get off early for Christmas and New Year's Eve and give the holidays off with pay. NOT Dollar General. Except for Christmas, you are expected to work.
    * Employees held accountable and written up for things outside their control: amount shoppers spend, overages/shortages in till (but you don't get to count it down and discrepancies $2 or higher get you written up with a termination on the fourth one)

    * Corporate is a pack of morons and daily demonstrates their stupidity
    * Management (district and regional) is unsupportive and pushes aside issues besieging the store
    * Only China government shows more disrespect and disdain for its citizens than DG does its employees
    * Corporate requirements tie the hands of store management in effectively accomplishing goals
    * High employee turnover because of corporate attitude
    * Did I mention every employee is treated as a common thief and subjected to a search before leaving the store

Worst company I have EVER worked for in my 40 years of employment. Only an enemy would be happily referred to Dollar General for employment. NEVER a friend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Turn your attention to your retail employees and treat them with respect. Stop treating them like common thieves and slave laborers. Observe the national holidays and lead the way back to closing stores so employees can enjoy time with their families.
