I have been working at Dollar General part-time (more than a year)

Pros

Flexible Schedule, friendly customers, friendly local management

Cons

Upper management will not see to it that things are fixed (or that we have AC) and expects too much of my local managers, its a dead end job, minimum wage

    Pros

Company promotes from within and is willing to work with you to get you where you need to be.

    Cons

Everything else. 6 day work weeks mandatory weekends. No sick tine. 4 month black out period for vacation requests. Ask too much on a daily basis. Tell you managers have a 48 hour work week but its always 55+ and you're paid salary and they make sure they take full advantage of that. Constantly cutting labor hours. Treat employees like criminals but not the customers that actually steal. Expected to be on call 24 hours a day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Waste of time. They dont listen

I worked at Dollar General full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

making friends with great customers and employees

    Cons

No life, Not enough pay, No control if you are management, you are always looked at as a thief, you as a store manager can't call off if you are sick, you are always required to work and be on call 24 hours a day even when you are on vacation your dm can call you to bother you with problems, and forget about family functions or funerals to attend. when you work for dg you have no life or family

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to senior management falls on deaf ears. They do NOT want to hear it. The ALMIGHTY DOLLAR IS KING. They all forget what it was to be like on the bottom. I believe that training for store managers is key. They get very little. Then when they take over a store they get no support. This company has lost a lot of very good managers who actually cared. You can only take the berating for so long. The company should have meetings in corp. with store managers, to listen to concerns and ways to fix it. or sit down with the managers when you go to visit a district, without the dm or rd there to give you the eye if you say something they don't want upper management to hear. During all senior management visits a lot of things are kept from you because, dm's and rd's don't want to look bad. (believe me I was threatened to keep my mouth shut during a visit)
