Was a great first job, but wouldn't work there again unless they had reliable employees to work with

Pros

Good pay, Friendly environment, boss was very nice and willing to work with me on scheduling most of the time, customers were nice, really liked the people I got to work with.

Cons

The store I worked at didn't have a employee area to take breaks or eat lunch. I had to eat in the back or in my car...
Can be stressful if the store doesn't have enough employees to get truck done by Saturday night.
District manager wasn't very nice at all...
I wanted the job for part time but to them working up to 40 hours is part time while I was a full time college student....
They don't care if you have a life outside of Dollar General, if they want you to work they made it clear I had to be there....
Getting a solid schedule was a nightmare, it was always changing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the managers a chance to manage and give them better pay, benefits. My boss worked pretty much open to close the whole 9 months i worked there because corporate wouldn't send her any help...

    Pros

There is upward mobility due to growth of stores.

    Cons

The biggest complaint I heard was that the employees felt they worked harder for less money than at other retailers. Full-time is less than 40 hours so that you do not get overtime, unless an emergency arises.

    Pros

They market products for low income households. It is a mini-Wal-Mart.

    Cons

They treat their employees like criminals, attempting to set up a culture of snitches by officially training employees on how to watch out for their thieving co-workers. They do this with training computer and video materials (which came from corporate) which reminded me of being in a cult similar to Nazi Germany in the 1930's. Very creepy and uncomfortable, so much so that it was difficult to feel like I was part of the team/company. There were incidents with district managers where they would hold phone conferences with various stores at a time and the district managers would literally scream at the employees using threatening language because the average employee was not turning in imagined thieving coworkers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are interested in protecting your inventory hire and train a proper loss prevention team for your stores and stop pressuring the average cashier to perform duties that where not in the job description. I did not appreciate being pressured into having to watch out for fellow coworkers nor the snitch culture within the company. Also, I did not appreciate acting as a loss prevention officer on top of my regular duties as associate and watch out if the customers are stealing. One cashier cannot run around the store keeping an eye out on customers and coworkers who may be in another part of the store, or spy on managers or assistant managers all at the same time. Hire a loss prevention team for your stores so that everyone can do what they are best at and stop feeding the hostile, oppressive, police-like culture in your stores. It sucks.
