Dollar General- do not work here unless you are Corporate! Key holders are just glorified cashiers.

Former Employee - Sales Associate in Point Pleasant, WV

I worked at Dollar General part-time (more than an year)

Pros

Meeting new people (customers)- the fact of being helpful to customers knowing every inch of the store and every item and location. The only thing I loved was the actual store and customers but would not recommend working there.

Cons

No insurance, work full time when desperate to complete something for bosses then bump clear down to 7-14 hrs per week, childish games, horseplay and harassment and nothing is done to stop these actions. A few nutty customers but not enough hours to live on

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real! Put yourself in others shoes. Could u live on 14 hrs a week! Could you restock the whole store with no A/C?

    Pros

Your fellow co workers are awesome (most of them). There is enough work to keep you busy & you have the chance to learn as much as you want.

    Cons

However, the continual growth doesn't translate into more help or technology so you end up doing more with less. The communication from the top down isn't very good. Some departments are not appreciated by upper management

I worked at Dollar General part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It's a good starting point and easy to get a job. If you appear on time you will be a valued asset.. Even if you smell like booze...

    Cons

    In store politics abound.
If you are young expect to be treated like crap.
If you need time off, for a family emergency type of event, expect to be hounded when you get back because you left them in a lurch even though you are always the one to pick up the slack.

When you leave they are sad because you are the "Best cashier we had" but not a once did you hear a good job from them or an offer for a promotion, instead offering it to the people who show up late/drunk just because they are older.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair and begin to care.
    That'd be a start.
