I have been working at Domtar

    Pros

Domtar has good benefits, long term goals, decent wages, supervisors that care about quality over quantity. The supervisors treat you like a person and not like some lowly laborer.

    Cons

Working with people that use the union to keep thier jobs instead of trying to do a good job.Working with equipment that is"fixed" to run instead of being repaired properly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the employees' that actually run the equipment, make the product, and handle the finished goods. Watch how they work and how they react to a good job done well.

I worked at Domtar full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues, benefits and location. Stimulating tasks. They offer flex time and 3 weeks vacation to start with 4 weeks after seven years.

    Cons

People that suck up and are manipulative get preferential treatment and management seems to be clueless or in agreement. Limited advancement opportunities; if certain managers feel that you leaving your department would be disruptive, it wont happen. Salary scale on the low end and raises are not in line with industry standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't take what you are being told by staff at face value, investigate. Interact more with staff instead of being behind closed doors and depending on "puppets" for departmental information to put on evaluations. Communication needs to be improved: inform all staff of changes/news instead of a few select people.
