Current Employee - Software - Agency Automation Team in Marietta, PA

I have been working at Donegal

Pros

1. High-level of teamwork and collaboration
2. Positive, can-do, want-to-do-it environment
3. Good compensation
4. Growing and profitable company
5. Beautiful headquarters
6. You're always busy and never idle
7. Highly competent leadership goes out of their way to treat employees with respect

Cons

1. Technology and some technology-thinking is older, so for a motivated tech-oriented worker that might start to feel restrictive and for the business itself it is wasteful to have to solve problems that could have been avoided
2. The big-picture business-problems themselves are pretty uninteresting for a tech person.
3. There isn't a whole lot else in the immediate area aside from Donegal and small restaurants/bars
4. I'm not convinced that there is room for career growth for everyone on the team

Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a business you guys are obviously doing a great job. But realize that if you want the best in terms of technology workers, while the money and positive work environment does go a long way, you will likely need to continue to update your tools/technology and push to keep workers abreast on the best-practices as they evolve in order to attract the best and keep them. IMHO technology workers that live and breath this stuf, feel empowered when they are able to solve new problems, more quickly, as opposed to old, re-occurring problems slowly with old tools. By updating your tools and skillsets/practices you can prevent many problems from even occurring and save money over the long-haul. It is a win-win, but takes some vision and some motivation to change for the better.

    I worked at Donegal

    Pros

Attractive bonus plans, good benefits, generous PTO/sick time

    Cons

Not as flexible as other companies. No work from home options. Minimal advancement opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunity for growth and development. Allow employees to feel like they are working toward something.

  2.

Great for a 9-5 with little stress. Easy work but very hierarchical with little room to grow.

Former Employee - Commercial Underwriter in Marietta, PA

I worked at Donegal full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I was a commercial underwriter processing applications and renewal for P&C, Auto and Workers Comp. The compensation was low but the bonus potential is high IF you are given a good territory. For the first couple years you will need to prove yourself with smaller, less productive brokers in a territory. You will have no chance at the UWing bonus with these brokers but if you can impress, they will give you better brokers to hit bonus with in upcoming years. Stress is very low and the workday is very laid back. Overtime is rare. Standard 40 hour week with limited - if any - travel.

    Cons

You will have no input on how to improve things at Donegal. Management decisions are taken in isolation and dictated to the staff. This is true for all departments and is the company management style dictated by the President.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to empower, include and motivate young staff that shows promise before you lose them. Countering with perks, benefits and money only after they have handed in a resignation letter is not pro-active.
