I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

-full benefits -competitive pay -weekends, and holidays off -possibility for overtime -you can move around in the district, plenty of opportunity to move up

Cons

raises are not going to happen (they did in the past) 90% of the employees are "grumpy old people" who complain all the time.

Until two years ago, Douglas County School District was a premier public school district in Colorado.

I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Community expectations for excellence in education, sound leadership, competitive salary and benefit package, extensive professional learning opportunities, growing district.

    Cons

Shift in political climate led to tea party conservatives taking over the school board and undermining the professionalism of educators in the district. Large numbers of teachers and administrators have left for retirement or other district positions.

    Advice to Management

A premier school district requires highly effective teachers. Research shows teachers are the most important education component in a child's academic success. The attack on public educators is a sad chapter in the history of Douglas County Schools.

I have been working at Douglas County School District (CO) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Staff within my building. Principal trying to support teachers, but without proper funding, even with a large fund balance, my students are denied the best education possible. The principal's hands are tied. Community Vision for the future with new Board

    Cons

Loss of collaboration, trust, respect, pay, benefits, and recognition for educational experience/knowledge. Overall mismanagement of the budget, $83 million fund balance, but class sizes of 30 plus and less choice for students to learn. No band at the elementary schools, shrinking band/orchestra at the middle schools, no art or music teachers at some elementary schools, and diminished requirements for high school students. High school students can no longer take a full load for all four years.

    Advice to Management

Do what is best for students, listen to the professionals that know what they are doing, and truly be transparent. Stop lying to our citizens.
