I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Depends on the department, but there is a general tendency to emphasize respect and doing the right thing. It is emphasized especially by the current CEO.

Cons

Work processes set up to drive the right behavior for the existing business acts as a terrible bureaucratic barrier for innovation and pursuit of new markets.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve cross-functional cooperation to act on new opportunities in the market.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good balance of work and life in general
    Opportunities to learn different skills
A lot of resources at your disposal, if you know how to access them.
Everyone has heard of your company, which saves some explaining to relatives
People are generally tolerant of timelines slipping

    Cons

Slowing moving, stuck in a commodity chemical mindset.
    Rigidly compliant to set processes.
Inpersonal, you have a problem? email a nameless email address and hope for a reply.
Dependence on contractors makes routine functions unpredictable, it can take months to get bills paid.
Constant layoffs and downsizing has made the morale of the work force dismal.
Innovation is a buzz word rather than a core value.
The company is more about managers playing politics, kick down kiss up will get you far.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop behaving is such a clearly hypocritical manor, like writing a book about jobs in America then shipping them to Korea, or claiming Dow doesn't fire scientists while you are in the midst of firing scientists.

I have been working at Dow Chemical full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Dow is very open to changing their culture, as is evident from their (necessary) business realignment, but also with lots of changes taking place internally. They are hiring a lot of recent college grads/younger people in Information Systems despite the tough economic environment.

They also place a lot of responsibilities on newer hires, which is a good sign of trust. The CEO is very well liked, and people seem happy here overall.

The city of Midland, MI is constantly working hard to revamp its image and build up its downtown, especially with the number of young people here, which is more than you'd expect.

    Cons

Midland isn't exactly a recent college grads dream city to live in. It's very family oriented and at times you may feel out of place if you're single or without kids.

Many employees here have been with Dow for 20-30+ years, so they're very knowledgeable, but at the same time they are set in their ways and have a hard time thinking outside of the box.

Dow is a very large company, and as such they operate as you'd expect a huge enterprise too - lots of redtape to cut through, and some things can take months to get done (but they are trying very hard to get better).

Sometimes the office can sound like a library. Thankfully though, the office isnt an endless row of cubicles (in some places)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The offices need remodeling. The walls are blank, the office setup can be awkward at times, and besides for some powerpoint templates and maybe a couple of posters in random locations, there is very little Dow pride to be found. The Diamond is a very evocative symbol and can be used in creative ways around the office to bring back that prideful feeling that employees work for Dow. Look to Dow's London taxi advertisements for some inspiration in how the Dow Diamond could be changed slightly in design, but still used effectively.
