Great hands on experience, but with limited rewards

Engineer (Former Employee) Houston, TX

Pros-All engineers get a nice, spacious office
-There is a lot of hands on experience with the design, manufacture, and testing of oil equipment products
-Small company environment offers great interaction with coworkers

Cons-Hours are not flexible
-Work hours can be very demanding
-No internet, outside emails, and PTO for the first 6 months of employment
-Raises are very small and inconsistent with the market
-401k benefits are low
-Favoritism is very apparent within the company
-Micromanagement cripples motivation to work
-No rewards or recognition for past accomplishments, especially when designing a new product line
-Very limited opportunities to learn new products
-No official training programs are offered, and everything is learned by "winging it"
-Still stuck on using archaic 2D modeling software, while competitors are using 3D modeling software
-Very easy to get pigeonholed into repetitive work

Advice to Senior ManagementOffer competitive pay and benefits to keep employees from leaving to competitors. Micromanage less, as it can hinder an employee's motivation to work.
