I have been working at Dril-Quip full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Good benefits
Most employees are friendly and generally good people.

Cons

Salaries are below market average and no indication that the company is improving their attitude.
Annual raises are poor (less than 3%). Raises are same for most everyone, regardless of performance.
Hourly employees work some overtime at time and one-half. Salary employees are over-worked and under-paid.
Too much micro management. This seems to be in every department.
Software is outdated and the company isn't willing to change..
Different treatment for men and women. The good 'ol boy network thrives here.
Employee training is poor or non-existent.

I have been working at Dril-Quip

    Pros

    Great people to learn from
Good place to start your career
    Great manufacturing experience
    Good facilities
    Good experience gained from work
    Pay is good

    Cons

    No flexible hours
Senior management spends too much time trying to micromanage your everyday activities
    Benefits a bit outdated
    Preferential treatment
    No leadership positions available
Titles do not mean anything unless management
    Poor training program
Not consistent within the company about raises/promotions some groups give better promotions/responsibilities/pay raises

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employ a training coordinator to properly train new engineers, learning on the job is great but sometimes there is more training required
Add flexible hours to keep and attract talented engineers
Micromanaging salary employees should be done by supervisors not senior management
Give engineers some responsibility with promotions

Former Employee - Engineer in Houston, TX

    I worked at Dril-Quip

    Pros

-All engineers get a nice, spacious office
-There is a lot of hands on experience with the design, manufacture, and testing of oil equipment products
-Small company environment offers great interaction with coworkers

    Cons

    -Hours are not flexible
-Work hours can be very demanding
-No internet, outside emails, and PTO for the first 6 months of employment
-Raises are very small and inconsistent with the market
    -401k benefits are low
-Favoritism is very apparent within the company
    -Micromanagement cripples motivation to work
-No rewards or recognition for past accomplishments, especially when designing a new product line
-Very limited opportunities to learn new products
-No official training programs are offered, and everything is learned by "winging it"
-Still stuck on using archaic 2D modeling software, while competitors are using 3D modeling software
-Very easy to get pigeonholed into repetitive work

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer competitive pay and benefits to keep employees from leaving to competitors. Micromanage less, as it can hinder an employee's motivation to work.
