I have been working at Duke Energy full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great people, marketable pay, training and professional development, pays up to $25K towards PHD.

Cons

Management often does not take the time to actually "manage" and develop staff. Positive reinforcement can go a long way.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take time to develop staff, provide cross training opportunities, take a direct approach to ee issues

I worked at Duke Energy full-time

    Pros

Top leadership does a great job communicating to employees. Very important given the company size.

    Great benefits, salaries, pension plan.

    Large, diverse Fortune 500 company.

EXTREME company-wide emphasis on safety. Seriously!!! Don't get caught jaywalking outside during lunch because if they know you work for Duke, they will call you out if they catch you.

    Cons

Despite the obvious success of the company, some departments still use outdated practices, technology, etc.

Culture clashes. Tenured employees, many whom have been around 30 or 40 years set the standard for how things get done. Lot of them are stuck doing things the "old"way and are resistant to new ideas or outsiders. Despite the size of the company, it feels like its stuck in a time bubble. Not the cutting edge company one would envision. Good ole boy network in full effect in most departments. Blind leading the blind since the merger. Highly ineffective leadership in some departments. Great place to work for someone who wants to coast and get a paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer mandatory retirement packages to some of those 30 & 40 year people who are weighing certain departments down.

I have been working at Duke Energy as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Relaxed work environment, stability, time for personal growth

    Cons

pay, limited growth opportunities for outsiders, discrimination in some quarters of the IT organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

especially in few areas of IT- management is too old who think of themselves as experienced being at Duke so long..but they have to understand that, its not 'experienced' but known as 'Aged' .Aged cheese is good but not the aged inefficient and incompetent management . Also learn from other biggies in the area like banks as to how to realize the potential of multicultural people...and let them grow and bring a different perspective to the organization.
