I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Child tuition benefit, health care benefits, 403(b) employer contributions

    Cons

Average pay, below average advancement opportunities for women and African Americans at all staff ranks on the University side of operations; virtually impossible for women hired on the bi-weekly payroll to transfer to monthly, salaried positions no matter what their educational attainment and work experience; below average investment in the professional development and training of employees; expectation to be accessible electronically 24/7 (including holidays--yes, this means Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter--, weekends, vacations), weak training/oversight of managers.

    Advice to Management

Duke is losing a lot of money and talent every day of the year because of the poor quality of their managers. Invest in selecting better managers, train them in developing talent and deploying resources, and be fairer and smarter about considering women on staff for promotion to management.
