I worked at Duke University full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Duke actually has good benefits for grad students - insurance, gauranteed maternity/paternity leave and vacation (unusual for PhD students).

Cons

long hours, no direction, little career development, no feedback

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give PhD students more career guidance, more feedback, make time-to-PhD smaller

I worked at Duke University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of resources available. Don't have to work too hard if you don't want to. Benefits are absolutely fantastic, particularly the retirement plans and if you have kids, the educational benefit.

    Cons

If you do want to work hard, opportunities for advancement are not easy to come by. There's definitely an academic old boy's network in place. Depending on the department, some interesting work is happening, but mostly it's not too challenging for the typical administrative staff member.
