I have been working at Duke University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They have a very competitive compensation for PhD students in engineering, which is great considering the cost of living in North Carolina is much better than say in California or Boston. The campus is both beautiful, and equipped with anything you could want to work and do research, as well as to play. The administration is very helpful when it comes to working through any issues you might have. I found that at least in my group, the work-life balance I desired was attainable, though I'm sure that's not the case for all graduate students.

    Cons

The parking situation is terrible. After three years I still don't have a pass to a lot on west campus where I work, which means I have to take a shuttle to campus from my parking lot. Luckily, the shuttles are fairly consistent, and after hours there is a very responsive van service that will take you to your lot or apartment if it's not far.

A pretty good place to work with some political minefields.
