Hiring, Always Hiring..

Direct Support Professional (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

Pros1.) Consumers on the most part are fun to work with and spend time around. 2.) Co-workers are hard-working and willing to assist you. 3.) Always extra hours/overtime available for those that need it. 4.) PTO benefits accrue but since you won't be able to use them - they make a nice severance package when you quit or are terminated.

Cons1.) Almost impossible to find a replacement when you need to take time off. Forget about taking a vacation because there just aren't enough staff to cover 2.) Management treat the staff as "resources" and not people. Condescending tones abound when upper management interact with direct support staff and laugh at them when they think they are not within earshot. 3.) Almost no possibility for advancement 4.) Health Insurance package is so expensive that you would have to work a second job just for the monthly payment. Most employees I know can't afford it and go without. 5.) Always high turnover due to high workload, low pay and unrealistic management job expectations. They do expect employees to be available to come in early, stay late and be flexible - as they like to schedule last minute "mandatory meetings" with little to no notice. Majority of your co-workers will be less than 1 year of experience in the job site you work. Be prepared to deal with many unanswered questions because nobody really knows the information you are asking about.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat the employees with respect and recognize them when they do exceptional work. Sending a cheap card once a year at the holiday season doesn't cut it. Your benefits package is terrible. Health plan sign ups once a year stinks. Forcing employees to work sick is also not a very professional way to protect the health and safety of the consumers. (And requiring an employee who makes just a buck or so over minimum wage to show up with a doctor's note because they were too ill to work their last shift is downright heartless - you know they can't afford your healthcare plan and now you want to force them to pay for a doctor? Shame on you!)
