Fun, dynamic company to work for, but not an easy place to be due to turmoil and uncertainty.

Pros

Fun culture, dynamic business. Lots of opportunities to learn about various retail financial services.

Cons

Balance sheet is a wreck due to the HELOC assets. It will be awhile before it is put back together, and when it is, my opinion is that it will be sold to a competitor.

Advice to Management

Clean up the balance sheet. It will be tough to attract and retain talented people otherwise. Those that remain will do so because they are unemployable elsewhere or scared of the current economy. Not the people you need to turn the company around.

    Pros

There is constant change happening at E*Trade so there will always be new and challenging things for the motivated employee. Since the company is small and in a constant state of change there are ample opportunities to shape your own role and take on additional challenges and responsibilities. The workplace is an EXTREMELY liberal company and the dress code is a very relaxed business casual. Discrimination is almost non-existent at E*Trade so you can be pretty well assured that you will be welcomed no matter who you are. The Arlington, VA office is in a great location just 4 miles West of DC in one of the most diverse areas of the nation.

    Cons

The company is caught in the midst of the credit crunch. There have been multiple layoffs as well as a recent hiring and promotion freeze. It can be difficult working at a company where there may or may not be a future for you. Senior management very rarely promotes from within the ranks which is due in part to the total lack of a development program. To succeed at E*Trade you have to be a truly self motivated go-getter willing to take on additional tasks as well as the established power structure. New executive level management does not communicate at all past the executive level. Directors down to the line level employees are complete in the dark in regards to the company‘s financial direction and stability.

    Advice to Management

Do more to retain valued employees. E*Trade does a poor job of developing talent from within the ranks.

    Pros

Etrade is a great place to begin a career in Finance. Getting you feet wet is mandatory from day one. They do take great care in training you properly for the position and provide ample time and training for getting all necessary licenses. Once all licenses have been acquired, further training is given to further improve your job performance. Also, self training in other fields and topics within the financial field is encouraged. Being originally a dot com company, the work atmosphere was fairly relaxed but was changing considerably when I left. The casual dress attire at work was still in place and definitely made for a more comfortable work environment.

    Cons

The long hours required. Overtime is generally mandatory. The minimum standards and quotas needed to be met at work was strictly monitored and can be extremely overbearing.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate the employees more. The work environment and the constant need to meet your "numbers" was stressful and numbing. This pressure seemed to come from the top since most supervisors I knew were also under the same kind of stress.
