Great coworkers, but the organization is too big for effective communication

I worked at ELS Language Centers part-time (more than a year)

Pros

The students are usually very interesting and motivated. There was a set curriculum for each course so most out-of-class work was grading, not writing lesson plans. The other teachers were helpful and fun to work with. The management provided good training.

Cons

It took a very long time (years) to gain more than part-time employment. Some promised benefits weren't realized. Student evaluations of teachers held way too much weight.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunity for full-time work to avoid fast turnover. Don't just evaluate teachers based on student opinions.

I have been working at ELS Language Centers full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It's nice to be able to interact with people from all over the world. The admin part is pretty structured and routine. Health benefits for full time work.

    Cons

HORRIBLE pay! As a for profit company, the pay is so low, even worse than some non-profit organizations or small businesses out there. They bend the rules at times in order to get more money from students. It's really all about profit and not about anything else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees competitive wages and show more respect and appreciation for those who are doing the hard work on a day to day basis.

I worked at ELS Language Centers full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Students, excellent peers, learning a lesson in business vs. educational value

    Cons

Long hours for salaried employee's, mismanagement, high stress, excessive unspecified responsibilities, feeling of never being finished

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Profitability is the most important thing in business. No one will hold this fact against ELS executives but there is a way to make profitability and education work together without creating the cut throat, disingenuous market which currently exists for ELS and its customers/employees.
