Former Employee - Lab Technician in Heidelberg, Baden-W├╝rttemberg (Germany)

I worked at EMBL as a contractor (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The salary and benefits are high (so hard work and strong commitment are expeceted).
An amazing place to work with scientists from all over the world, making EMBL an amazing multi-culti place to work
    English as a working language
Your work experience is usually valued outside EMBL and most of the time helps you to move your next position
    Lots of social events
    Overall very friendly atmosphere

    Cons

Despite available training limited career opportunities as Lab technician are possible (as lab technician you join, as lab technician you leave)
    Fixed term contracts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unacceptable and unprofessional behaviors of some group leaders in their way of managing staff occur too often.
A strong team management training for group leaders (specially the ones without previous people management experience) should be compulsory and a close monitoring should be done by heads of Units and HR

Current Employee - PhD Student in Grenoble (France)
Current Employee - PhD Student in Grenoble (France)

I have been working at EMBL full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Resounding name (at least in Europe).
Nicely paid (at least as a PhD).
Nice training opportunities (core course in Heidelberg, informatics in Hinxton, soft-skill courses).
Thesis committee overlooking your PhD, and step in if you got troubles with your supervisor.

    Cons

Group leaders are young, being boss for the first time, so they can be quite bad in management.
Grenoble outstation feels a bit isolated. Opportunities are not as much as in Heidelberg.
