Great Career Stepping Stone - Antiquated HR Prevents Anything Else

I have been working at EMC

    Pros

    - Fast Paced
    - Great cooworkers who share a common passion for technology and assisting each other
    - Highest ranks of executive management are very accessible and willing to help
    - Robust training catalog...if you can find time to take advantage of it

    Cons

    - HR system is HORRIBLY antiquated and the biggest bureaucracy in the company. The system is set up like it's 1973 at IBM - the VP of Global HR has to approve all hires over a certain salary level, and job requirment vacancies are managed at the last minute whims of the company's quarterly financial performance...this makes it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to consistently hire good talent
    - Internal IT continues to be a barrier to productivity. Continued insistence on utilizing a poorly managed and performing VPN to access mediocre systems like Powerlink (company knowledgebase), ECN (company "sort of" Sharepoint team site manager), and eRooms (Documentum) is a real barrier to productivity because mobile workers using iPhones, etc. can't get to any of it.
    - The overwhelming, religious crush to make quarterly number goals doesn't foster any goals or initiatives that benefit anything but the next 90 days
    - Little proof that the company has the agility to transform itself as a strong player in an IT market under SERIOUS transformation in what customers are expecting and willing to pay for. Having great marketing that uses phrases like "Cloud" and "Big Data" are pointless if product engineering, pricing, and sales teams still think all anybody wants to still do is buy an expensive storage arrays based off a slicksheet and declarations that the competition sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Revamp the HR process from top to bottom or continue to face having a talented, passionate employee base that burns out over time
    - Stop subscribing to trivial, silly cost cutting measures as a way in contributing to keep the stock price strong. If EMC was serious about cost cutting, it could start by eliminating at least 33% of its underutilized office space across the US.
    - Start paying a dividend on company stock. This will stop market analysts from still believing EMC is a ".com Darling" from 2000 and allow for some real, long term procedural and product change that needs to occur within the company that will invariably affect the stock. Just saying we're adapting to a new market and slapping words like "Cloud" and "Big Data" won't work - you're just painting over rust.

A big company headed by a CEO who is afraid on conflict and will never fire anyone despite poor performance.
