I have been working at EMC

    Pros

EMC is diverse, global, and industry-leading. If you're good at what you do and are passionate about it, you'll find a way to fit in at EMC. At EMC you will be exposed to people and ideas from around the globe, in a culture that values results above perception. EMC's efforts over the years in acquiring leading companies means that there are fresh cultural shakeups on a regular basis. Rather than crushing the independent spirit of acquired companies, the cultures of those companies find their way into the mainstream and bring something new to everyone else.

A recurring theme over recent years has been "One EMC." This has meaning to customers but also employees; no matter where you work, you have ways of connecting to the global culture of EMC. Information sharing inside the company is growing at an incredible pace. You shouldn't ever have to worry about feeling isolated or powerless.

    Cons

EMC's size can make it slow to change, and corporate direction can sometimes clash with the culture or wishes of smaller groups. Sometimes it's unclear where a directive came from, or why a historical "rule" has stuck around. It's not always easy to know who to talk to about something which is impeding your work.

In a company so big, there are some tricky internal politics which have developed over many years. It can be a bit confusing to newcomers who don't quite get the internal landscape. It can also be frustrating to see great technology in all corners of the company and wonder why it takes so long to integrate it into products for customers.

While movement within the the company is encouraged, it's not officially facilitated. With so many divisions and locations, job rotation schemes seem like a natural fit, but unless you seek out internal opportunities yourself you are unlikely to find them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Push decision power down as far as you can. The more organizations are experimenting with different styles, the more likely a winning style will rise to the top. Let go of as many corporate objectives as you can, and push for every organization to follow that kind of lead.
