I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Still a growing company so there is opportunity for those who want to find it. Good leadership with clear vision have carved out a unique identity in the industry. Financial strength creates possibilities for the future. Stable succession plan in place.

Cons

Culture has evolved since the days of Dick Egan and some of the executives are more self-serving than in the past, plus there are a lot more of them. Decision-making is slower and communication between manager and IC levels is poor in some areas of the company. Everyone's My Cousin still applies.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold executive relatives and referrals accountable for performance or manage them out like any other employee. For those reading this, it's a nit in an otherwise quality company but it is an opportunity for improvement. Improve communication from middle management to IC level.

    Pros

Great work-life balance. Many educational opportunities to advance career or learn more about EMC. Also alot of opportunity for promotions.

    Cons

Big company - so lots of red tape. It takes a long time for processes to complete

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more women in top executive team. Women recruits notice this when looking at EMC as a place to work.

A great place to work - if you like politics and inept colleagues

Former Contractor - Project Manager in Santa Clara, CA

I worked at EMC as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible work environment - EMC has offices almost everywhere so you can work at an office close to home (in many cases) or even work from home if desired.
Hands-off management - both a pro and a con (see below)
Pretty decent IT help desk if you have problems with your PC
As an employee you can take classes, travel and the like - as a contractor you are a third class citizen
Enormous amount of resources readily available for you to use if needed (if you know how to navigate through the system).
Lots of opportunities to work with others globally if you choose to do so
Relatively decent equipment to do your job - not as decent as a social media start-up but good enough to get your work done.

    Cons

Pay is way below industry average -- you need to negotiate A LOT to get slightly below market rate
Too many redundant applications adding innumerable wasted hours of busy work
Extremely siloed as well as extremely political environment which makes it hard to find answers to simple questions.
For every rule there are ten exceptions and for every ten exceptions there are twenty more
Management hides in meetings or in their offices and avoids personnel problems until its too late
No concept of work-life balance - be prepared to have meetings at 5AM and on weekends if necessary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perform a corporate wide audit to investigate where waste is inside the company -- wasted resources, redundant personnel, poor leadership, etc. and get rid of it. Hire individuals based on their qualifications and provide them the resources to excel.
