I have been working at EMC full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Great work-life balance. Many educational opportunities to advance career or learn more about EMC. Also alot of opportunity for promotions.

Cons

Big company - so lots of red tape. It takes a long time for processes to complete

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need more women in top executive team. Women recruits notice this when looking at EMC as a place to work.

Great until org got big, bloated, inefficient, and hyper-political

I worked at EMC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay, benefits, flexible schedule, work from home, people (most, anyway)

    Cons

Bureaucracy, politics, too many high-paid directors and VPs doing nothing of value, too many reorgs for the sake of reorgs, ultimately position offshored to China (an English technical writing job, no less!) with no warning or inkling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Know the value of your employees and choose quality work, accumulated knowledge, and breadth and depth of experience over mindless "cost savings."

    Doesn't Recommend

A great place to work - if you like politics and inept colleagues

Former Contractor - Project Manager in Santa Clara, CA

I worked at EMC as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible work environment - EMC has offices almost everywhere so you can work at an office close to home (in many cases) or even work from home if desired.
Hands-off management - both a pro and a con (see below)
Pretty decent IT help desk if you have problems with your PC
As an employee you can take classes, travel and the like - as a contractor you are a third class citizen
Enormous amount of resources readily available for you to use if needed (if you know how to navigate through the system).
Lots of opportunities to work with others globally if you choose to do so
Relatively decent equipment to do your job - not as decent as a social media start-up but good enough to get your work done.

    Cons

Pay is way below industry average -- you need to negotiate A LOT to get slightly below market rate
Too many redundant applications adding innumerable wasted hours of busy work
Extremely siloed as well as extremely political environment which makes it hard to find answers to simple questions.
For every rule there are ten exceptions and for every ten exceptions there are twenty more
Management hides in meetings or in their offices and avoids personnel problems until its too late
No concept of work-life balance - be prepared to have meetings at 5AM and on weekends if necessary

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perform a corporate wide audit to investigate where waste is inside the company -- wasted resources, redundant personnel, poor leadership, etc. and get rid of it. Hire individuals based on their qualifications and provide them the resources to excel.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
