Solid company but don't join Global Services unless you like installing product

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Cares about customer. Broad product line. Management is good at execution. Global Services knows how to migrate disk arrays at midnight on a Saturday. Makes good acquisitions.

    Cons

Don't work in Global Services. Major reorganization that guts high value consulting organization and lumps as part of product installation services. Everyone with skills is leaving.

Delivery consultants are thrown under the bus for other people's mistakes including mistakes by the sales people who setup the projects.

Services sales people constantly oversell capabilities. Executive management wants Global Services to deliver Transformation to customers but doesn't have the capability of delivering.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't think the new Global Services organization will help you deliver IT Transformation to customers. Limit services to installing new disk arrays and products and you will be fine.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Was very entrepreneurial and some areas are still. Plenty of different discipline areas to explore and develop in. Customer satisfaction driven organization.

    Cons

Becoming very bureaucratic in it's operations. Less cross role flexibility, meaning your role is all you're to be working on. Lost the basis of a good consulting organization. People are turning their brains off to work within the constraints of the machine that is being built. Doesn't seem to be improving consulting revenue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if you want to stay effective and relevant, as a consulting services provider, you need to benchmark better against highly successful consulting organizations, especially for consultant retention and development. If you just want to be a body shop, then continue your path of rate erosion and lack of entrepreneurial outlets.
