Great people, casual atmosphere

I worked at EarthLink

Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Great entry into networking support.

Cons

Management missteps. No true understanding of the value of their position in the market.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every company has to differentiate themselves. Earthlink used to have a focus on great customer service. I have no idea what they are good at now.

    I worked at EarthLink full-time

    Pros

    Cheap price points for products
    Public company

    Cons

Sales commissions are based on service install that never happens
No direction or support from middle management on development and growth of accounts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of unqualified lower clec managers. Completely in over their heads when dealing with the c-level execs

I have been working at EarthLink full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

decent product set but nothing to set it apart from competitors.
some good people on the front lines and support roles.

    Cons

Low pay, expensive benefits. Micro-managed by middle-management group that has forgotten what it is like in the real world - same tired old CLEC mindset that does not compete in today's market. No clear direction; company doesn't know what it wants to be when it grows up. Compensation plan changed mid-year (when earnings fell) to detriment of sales people, no one can explain (or will) the new comp plan so there is no way to verify is payouts are correct.
Low morale in most offices, churn and burn every 6-8 months, and nobody in upper management seems too concerned, they keep doing things the same way every month. Terrible, plain terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rid yourselves of complacent, ineffective middle-management and refresh with brighter, new thinking sales people. Forget "Sales 101" training and equip your salesforce with good knowledge, prepared for marketplace. Decide what you want to be and do it well - figure out how to do it on a phased roll-out approach, rather than dumping it on the sales people with no training or systems/support in place.

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
