Eastman Kodak – “Not bad....not bad at all.”
Pros
EK Dayton Operations is a good place to work. If you're a motivated, positive person and have a knack for all things engineering - you will be recognized. I really enjoy being the guy behind the scenes making everyone's work run a bit more smoothly. My skill set is broad and fits right into design and engineering work without all the hassles of that "let's reinvent the wheel" engineer's modus operandi. A sense of humor helps in any job, not just this one.
Internet Access: If you have a real job at EK, you have a computer and internet access to yourself. I use the internet for research, education and occasional entertainment. It's very nice to be trusted to complete one's work and be given the privilege of internet access.
Time Cards: We don't have them. You are required to be trustworthy. Trust is big here at Kodak - and it is well appreciated. Simply, if you are in the habit of cheating your employer and stealing wages then you will be a poor performer elsewhere and lose your job anyway. Can't say I didn't warn you.
Co-Workers: Aside from the occasional emotionally disturbed, middle-management buffoon; your co-workers are well mannered, motivated people. They are thankful for your work and will tell you so.
Cons
Titles and management tiers are terribly mishandled in Dayton. There are folks working on key projects with Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering titles with degrees in Biology, High School and Junior High. Yes, I am serious. It's just not fair to other employees with college educations in the engineering fields. Experience with a product is one thing, but college teaches more than scientific information. It can also teach good organizational and time management skills as well as forming good leadership principles.
Advice to Senior Management
You work hard enough to keep your boss happy. You're generally friendly and appropriately stand-offish. You've worked hard to get where you are - ignoring the underlings is probably helpful.
