Pros

A good place for a reporter because of the vitality and constant change

Cons

A declining industry with few opportunities and limited imagination and willingness to shift to new technologies, such as the Internet

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't hold back. Your local coverage is your most significant asset, something that is not duplicated by national services or competitors. It has continuing value, for expats, for research, etc. I'd love to hear a publisher say "The Internet can cut my production and circulation costs by 90%. How can I best take advantage of that?"

    Pros

The industry as a whole is facing great challenges, and any efforts made to right the ship locally may be in vain in the big picture if the newspaper industry in general does not turn around in Canada.

    Cons

Fewer and fewer staff around to handle content production.

    Positive Outlook

    I worked at Edmonton Journal

    Pros

The people were great and there was a healthy respect for personal life there.

    Cons

There wasn't a lot of opportunity to move around or up. Sometimes there was not a lot of work and it was not always challenging.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Challenge staff more, and stretch their limits and their minds.
