I worked at Education Management Corporation

Pros

Nice office with good parking at Chandler location. The people were nice and the building was nice and cool. Mind numbing job.

Cons

Horrible management and unethical business practices. Management is always on your tail about getting more students. Micro-managing. No freedom. Stay away.

I have been working at Education Management Corporation full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

EDMC will give virtually anyone a shot. They hire masses and masses of people, especially young people under 30, many right out of college. Very few companies are willing to do that nowadays. Overtime is strongly encouraged and, as long as you're hitting your goals, the atmosphere is very lax. You put in your own timecard, you can look at your phone while on the job, look at other things online, take a lunch whenever you want, go on break whenever you want, etc. Nobody is looking over your shoulder and questioning you about these things, as some other companies do. Of course, it all comes down to the number of students you get to start. That decides your fate. However, whatever anyone says of EDMC, they will hire young people right out of college for over $40k. How many other employers in the area, in this economy, will do that? So, I give them their dues for that. This is a solid job opportunity as long as you go into it knowing that it will be extremely difficult and have a plan to get a real job within 6 months.

    Cons

They claim that it's not sales, but it is. You will constantly be under pressure to get applications and get students to start. There are no excuses for why you fail to meet your goals. If the student went to a previous school, is in default on a prior loan, and cannot receive financial aid...too bad. That's still your fault. If a student just decides to never pick up the phone or return your calls again after doing the application, that's also your fault. There are strict goals and you are constantly reminded of them. Management will constantly talk about how poorly the team is doing, how more effort is needed, etc. There is talk about helping students, but the talk consists of helping them get start by pushing them to apply on the first call. These calls can last up to 2 hrs and you are trained to do everything possible to keep them talking and not let them hang up. Also, right now there is a raise freeze. If you have your degree, then you will be hired at a flat rate of $41k per year. No bonuses, no raises, barely even a pat on the back for hard work. You will often stay an extra 2 hours late to work with a student, just to have them never pick up the phone again. This, along with constantly seeing good, decent coworkers get frustrated and quit, is the toughest part of the job. There are a great number of good employees at EDMC and very few make it past a year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder on keeping the talent, instead of watching top ARs walk out the door because you refuse to give them a $2 an hour raise. That's pathetic.
