I have been working at Edward Jones full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Cooperative colleagues, not competitive. The firm promotes putting the client first, growing your business through long-term relationships and service, and career-life balance. You have an extraordinary amount of freedom to run the business the way you would like and to recommend investments that you feel are best for your clients--with some limitations. There are no proprietary Edward Jones investments to sell and I have never felt pressured to offer a particular product or service.

Cons

This is a sales job, after all, and it isn't easy. This is particularly true while building your business--which is your responsibility. Because it is a BUSINESS, you have to keep the bottom line in mind. This career path can be quite mentally challenging and the earnings can be unsteady.

Be a hardcore salesman or you won't last as an FA

I worked at Edward Jones full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

****Before taking a job as an FA you need to look at yourself and seriously ask yourself if you are willing to cold call/knock on strangers doors for years. Everyones says they can but very few can. If you are part of the 20% or so who make it, you'll get rich. This firm is great if you are a salesman. If you aren't you'll be gone quickly.

-Freedom of owning your own business (but remember you don't own your business)
-Fantastic support system to help you but YOU have to do the work
-Great bonus structure and incentives to help you build along the way

    Cons

    - Prospecting and selling family, friends (can be complicated)
    - Always have to be selling
    - Your clients aren't yours if you leave, VERY BIG DEAL but no one cares when they're just starting
    - Very hard to build your business from scratch
    - Hard to compete against lower cost alternatives

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be shills for American funds. Around 70% of EJ funds are in American funds, EJ is essentially the sales wing of American funds.

Make stock trades cheaper so advisors can be competitive in the increasingly cost conscious retail investor space.
