I have been working at Eli Lilly

    Pros

    Brilliant coworkers
    Great benefits package
    Flexible schedule
Renewed focus on innovation and commitment to open office setting
    Beautiful facilities and multiple campuses

    Cons

A sense of working within a silo
Communication and bureaucratic breakdowns across cross functional teams
Redundant work being done across the company due to lack of proper communication

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Eli Lilly is a giant machine with multiple moving parts. There is a renewed focus on innovation, but I believe a focus on communication is more important. I would suggest that the leadership at Eli Lilly find an avenue for all employees to share their work and encourage collaboration whenever possible.

    Good company with incompetent management

    I worked at Eli Lilly

    Pros

Interesting problems to work on and input of associates is welcomed by most of the higher level scientists. Teamwork is valued, as is safety.

    Cons

Projects never die at Lilly. Managers seem incapable of "killing" them so scientists are freed to work on new targets. Far too much time is spent on ePM and because of the layoffs people are constantly looking over their shoulders wondering "Is my group going to be next?" There is no trust with upper management. And the company is very bloated at the top. In addition, there are meetings to prepare for meetings which is a huge waste of time for all concerned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of a lot of your middle level management. You don't need as many people as you have in those roles. Let the data speak for itself and kill projects when data indicates it isn't going anywhere. Furthermore, stop advancing the first molecule to get through all the hurdles. Instead, advance those molecules that truly ARE the best for a given target. Stop the outsourcing to China & India. They don't value intellectual property and it is only going to hurt the Lilly brand.
