Former Employee - Commercial Sales in San Francisco, CA

I worked at Elsevier full-time for more than a year

Pros

Cross functional teams allow for high visibility, growth, and movement. Great salary and benefits. International offices allow for geographical movement as well.

Cons

Seems to be almost annual "reorganization". In sales position, constant changing of territories and key client assignments deters strong relationships from being built.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a meaningful sales organization structure and stick with it for 3 years before you change it up. It changes so often that it can't be accurately assessed. No one can ever reap the benefits of the past years' investment.

I have been working at Elsevier full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company offers flexible hours and a very relaxed atmosphere.

    Cons

If you're coming in from an outside company and you have some good work experience, you can probably negotiate a decent salary. However, if you start out here, expect to be held down at the extreme lower end of the salary range no matter how high you work your way up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep good people.

I have been working at Elsevier full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good benefits and flexible time off.
Nice office setting with security and covered parking.
    Salary is modest.

    Cons

    Poor communication from upper management
Silos of organization prevent effective cooperation between business units
    Promotion/pay increase opportunities very limited
Hire too many long term temps, resulting in constant turn over and loss of investment by staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a tremendous pool of knowledge and skills in your current employees. Leverage that talent and promote your deserving employees/temps.
