Emerson pretends to an innovative company, until real innovation threatens one of the larger divisions.

Pros

It is a financially sound company, which is very important. If they stick to their core values, they will be around for a very long time. Emerson is probably a better company to invest in than work for.

Cons

Below average compensation.

The corporate culture makes it very hard to solve problems, because the problem solving process has become more important than solving the problem itself.

Although Emerson Process Management touts itself as an innovator, you'd better make sure your innovation doesn't make one of the big divisions (PSS, Rosemount, or Regulators) look bad, because your innovation will be killed.

Emerson Process Management also has a reputation for being very arrogant, especially outside of the U.S. Emerson seems to have the opinion that customers will buy what we tell them, because we know what's best.

It was announced just recently that Emerson Process Management was going to start talking to customers before developing new products. How innovative. How fresh.

Advice to Management

Keep managing the company financially the way you have been for the last 100+ years. You are doing a great job. Realize, however, that to develop truly innovative products and services requires an open mindset that just does not exist in the organization.

    Pros

There's no lack of job security. Do your job right and you'll have a place until retirement. It's just a question of if you want to be here that long.

    Cons

Upward mobility is only available if you start at the bottom. If you start anywhere near the middle, you're out of luck. Promotion through sister divisions is only available out of state and if you start off in CA, you don't want to end up in the midwest. The so-called "merit" increases is distributed from a pool that is always miraculously 3.1% or the same as the CPI. Any raises beyond this adjustment in inflation is only available through a promotion. Middle managers will get more and more responsibility as a reward for doing a good job without promotion, promise of promotion, or any further compensation. Management's attitude is "you're lucky to still have a job". This is the price of job security. Make your own informed decision. Good luck.

    Advice to Management

Systemic problems come from corporate and nothing can be changed from the division. I'd advise the company to keep morale up with small tokens of appreciation. Penny pinching merely belies productivity and quality costs without really benefiting the bottom line.

    Pros

Good Stable company. Profitable. High Potential Employees can advance quickly. Opportunities around the world. Promotes from within. Innovative people with ability to solve problems in all functions and areas. Onsite fitness center and classes available.

    Cons

Work - life balance is not great. Location within St. Louis is bad. There is nowhere to live nearby - most commute 30+ minutes. Old manufacturing culture. Office politics at its worst.

    Advice to Management

Continue expanding into emerging markets. Work on developing talent and leadership within.
