Pros

Advance opportunities, good upper and middle leadership

Cons

Things take a while to come to life, being a governmnet agency sometimes the money doesn't come quite up to par with the private sector, yet is offset with the benefits and pension.

I worked at Employees Retirement System of Texas as a contractor

    Pros

The physical environment is nice- clean, well-maintained, and comfortable.

    Cons

Training for the employee call-center was horrible. The information given was inadequate and inconsistent. The trainers are scatterbrained and barely literate. As a new hire, your performance is marked down for asking for clarification on various subject matter even if it was not covered in training. Not at all hospitable to new hires and an all around miserable experience.

I have been working at Employees Retirement System of Texas full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Public sector institution that wants to function much like a private sector business. Has the desire to be technically advanced when providing retirement and insuarance services to state employees.

    Cons

Too many projects without staffing levels to support workload. A great deal of employee burnout. IT department unable to move current pipeline of projects due to lack of resources. Most Director level leadership in organiztion are made up of career level state employees and are not well versed in leadership practices that optimize organizational success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either hire staff to support workload or reduce the number of projects. Hire external Director level positions to bring fresh ideas to organization. Senior level leadership should pay more attention to frontline and middle level staff. The organization has a Classist mentality, which negatively affects collaberation within the organization and creates a great deal of in-fighting.
