The upper management hand picks their favorites and they are the ones who get all the opportunities and promotions. If you are a family member or went to the same school you are part of this special group, otherwise you have to jump through hurdles to get notice and quite often that is not enough. I have seen many, many highly qualified individuals be passed up for opportunities because they weren't part of this special group. This is a huge reason for the high turnover rate for BA’s. There is a huge favoritism vibe in the company and no one is oblivious to it. Half if not more of the BA are quite unhappy and are constantly looking to leave.

There are a handful of BA’s who have been at the company longer than 3 years and the simple reason for this is Empyrean simply does not value them. Once you put in your two-week that is when upper management responds to your comments about growth and they throw the boat at you trying to keep you to stay. At that point they just want to save face and not make it seem like they did everything they could.

As far as the work life balance goes, working here means everything else, everything comes second; and not just during Open Enrollment season. You get a laptop when you start, and that may seem cool, but in reality it’s a method to make you work even when you are not in the office. You earn roughly 20 days a year in vacation time, using those days is a different story. Taking vacation that you've earned is frowned upon and you are treated as if you are doing something wrong. Even on vacation there are times where you might be called in and asked to work, that laptop came in handy! The compensation is awful, for the amount of work you are asked to do and the level of quality asked, the ends don’t meet the means.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to either start to value your employees or stop pretending you do, you are not fooling anyone. Do not wait until an employee hands in their notice to start to make changes to retain that employee. A proactive approach is much better than a reactive one, also it will let other employees who may feel the same way know that you care and want to make the work experience better. You continue to lose quality staff members and it takes time to train up new staff members to that same level that value lost could have easily been avoided had you paid attention to the needs of your employees. Also pay your employees a reasonable salary, in today’s day you can’t tell employees they are being paid in the top 25 percentile of their job category when they can easily google it and learn they are more towards the bottom 25 percentile.

    Great salary - esp. for industry
    Rich benefits package
    Stable industry
    Caring leadership and management with a true open door policy

    Cons

    As in all avenues of this industry - Annual Enrollment and Implementations are busy. You will work more, but it pays off later. (Do it right, then relax some.) This business may not be for an individual that favors a constant/easily predictable schedule.

    Don't pay much attention to some of the initial comments posted here. Looks like a few employees did not work out - but it motivated others to speak up and share reality! Great job Empyrean!

    Pros

    generous PTO (20 days/year in your first year)
    nice, casual culture with jeans, TV's in snack rooms, table tennis, socials
    good health benefits, $3000 referral bonus and continuing education hours allowance
    free parking - unusual for inside the 610 loop
    everybody knows you and seems to care, even the "C" level people
    flexible hours - come in early or come in late, just get your work done
    exciting to work for a company that is growing and innovating

    Cons

    starting salary could be higher, but the raises are above average
    high work load during the "busy" season - but every industry has that problem

    keep listening to your people and reward those who perform for you
