I worked at Empyrean Benefit Solutions

Pros

Empyrean is a great place to gain exposure to the employee benefits world. If you are a person that will ask questions and seek out additional explanations to problems yu will learn quite a bit. The employees with the most benefit experience are loyal to the company, although not reciprocated.

Cons

Empyrean is a small company, still having some growing pains. Most of their customer service employess originate from the competition, Mercer HR Services, and come with quite a bit of experience, which is one of the cons; these employees desire growth, however, the company does not promote much from within. Empyrean has overlooked knoweledgeable employees for promotions and hired friends or associates of current employees instead. This is definitely a moral killer.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities for growth. Certain employees should be able to take advantage of continued education classes or some type of licensing(Life) to help support their career. Long term employees should be encouraged to further their career. The more seasoned employees can be most beneficial to those newer employees with the same loyalty for their company and the customers they support.

I have been working at Empyrean Benefit Solutions full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Empyrean has an excellent product. This is a key factor that is the basis for everything else. A great product means happy clients, happy clients mean more growth for the company, more growth for the company means more opportunity. There is also significant investment in new technology to stay at the forefront of the Ben Admin industry.

The culture at Empyrean is excellent. Employees at all levels take pride in what they're working on. There is an entrepreneurial feel that everyone is here to work together for the good of the client and their employees. They work hard but you see occasional breaks where people chat, play basketball, ping pong, etc. I've been here a little more than a month and I can't remember how many people have offered help, advice, or just taken an interest in who I am and what I'm working on. All of this is not by accident, the leadership models these traits and they are encouraged throughout the organization.

    -Transparency in leadership
    -Company wide events
    -Department specific celebrations
    -Full kitchen on each floor
    -Competitive compensation
    -Lots of opportunity

    Cons

Many of the cons in this company are more industry specific. No matter where you work there will be parts of the job, company, or the industry that you may not like. The goal is to find a company that provide the support and resources needed to succeed. That being said, if you are looking at a career in the professional services industry be prepared for:

Seasonal Demands-Open enrollment is very busy and will require more time. This is balanced the rest of the year.
Client Demands-You work for Empyrean and Empyrean works for their clients. Your client may need more help.
Complexity-This is a very complicated industry and it's always changing. Expect to be constantly learning.
No onsite gym for Empyrean employees. There is a discounted gym membership offered near the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As Empyrean continues to grow it's technology and expand market reach continue to lead in a way that preserves and enhances the culture.

I have been working at Empyrean Benefit Solutions full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexibility of when you can come into the office, work from home (although I've seen some managers go on some sort of a power trip and take that away)
    Nice office
Fresh batch of smiles and positive attitude every few months with PDP (unfortunately that doesn't last more than a few months.
Managers that want to listen but they have a lot on their plates just as everyone so they forget
Fun activities from time to time

    Cons

    Turnover is high

Mediocre salary increases and bonuses at best for the amount of work/stress people put up with and directors say "it's a bonus ... Be happy with what you got. Don't have expectations. The company doesn't have to give you anything". Of course ww expect it! It was on your offer letter and we were sold on it to accept the job to offset the lower salary!

Annual cost increase of medical plans is more than most other places including company's own clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change needed here can't be made overnight but here are a few quick hitters

    1) get a new consulting firm that advises you on benefit plans. Cost of medical increasing that much should be a red light to HR. The reasoning given when switching from Aetna to UHC was to save on cost increases. Read the news on average annual increases for the area rather than relying solely on data provided by your consultants. This is our work, we take note of these things.

    2) Don't be a reactive company. It shouldn't take for someone experienced to turn in a 2 week notice to have serious conversations on stress and salary. By then it's too late. Take stress off your managers so they can remember these conversations with employees.

    3) Some people are doing the work of 2,3,4 people at the expense of their own health and family life. Increasing head count doesn't increase resources on a project. Stop this madness and focus on keeping resources.
