Pros

It is a very professional work environment and your colleagues are always willing to share and collaborate their independent work.

Cons

Management is always willing to listen but not often willing to move on policy which sometimes leaves them behind the curve. Overly cautious but nonpartisanship can be helpful later on.

I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Collaboration with other fellows was the best part. While each fellow may have only experienced a few challenges and only had limited resources to tackle those challenges, there was a Google discussion group in which fellows could ask others for info and help, and learn more about challenges affecting other fellows to broaden our knowledge.

The EDF staff was also readily available to help us work out issues and solve barriers our host organizations were facing.

For the first few weeks there were expert phone calls every day to gain more technical knowledge.

    Cons

Candidates with MBA's were matched with the best fellowships, despite not necessarily having the qualifications to perform those fellowships as well as other candidates may have.

The fellowships were also so short that, while fellows could propose projects, they left the organizations just in time for the project implementation phase. To ensure the projects are actually implemented and to provide that learning opportunity to fellows, it would be interesting to offer yearlong or part-time semester-long fellowships.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider candidates with other degrees, offer yearlong fellowships to get more work done and be more involved in project implementation.

I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very pragmatic, yet innovative organization to work for. Seeks to accomplish large-scale environmental change with as many partners as possible. Strong organizational culture. Supportive work environment. Upper management/executives are open and receptive. Strong leadership throughout organization.

    Cons

For new hires, it can be tricky to integrate into and navigate the organization. Programs and departments operate in silos and there is less cross-departmental communications and coordination.
