I have been working at Environmental Protection Agency full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

If you are inspired by an organization's mission and are a soldier for the environment, EPA is the place to work.

Cons

If you are a star, you better watch your back. You show other people who are comfortable with average or below average and it pisses them off. There are a lot of people with "it's good enough for government." It's hard to get rid of bad apples.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be more nimble and expect results. The environment is moribund and slow. Don't continue to accept average or below average.

I have been working at Environmental Protection Agency full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules; challenging work if you choose to engage. Average to hard workers stand out for recognition admist the too many slackers that are tolerated.

    Cons

Unions run the show in the current administration and they seek to protect the lowest common denominator. The flavor of the monthis embraced by senior management with unquestioning vigor. Turf protection and CYA too much a part of the culture. Too many "back office" staff controlling and draining resouces from mission related work. There are a lot of lawyers in this office, and many of them prefer not to do legal work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do something about the slackers. Use peer pressure to control improve the behaviour of some in your ranks (angry outbursts, inability to receive feedback, retaliation, etc. )

I worked at Environmental Protection Agency as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

great location, feeling of importance, it was a lot of fun to gain access to committee meetings and hearings on the hill

    Cons

bureaucracy makes it impossible to be efficient, too much red tape to get anything done. worked on one project that was done separately by four different departments.
