I have been working at Environmental Systems Design full-time (more than an year)

Pros

ESD receives some of the most diverse and rewarding work. The people I work with day-to day are great. Technical knowledge within the firm is impressive.

Cons

Management could use some work. There isn't a set training schedule for new hires. ESD expects you to learn-as-you-go.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't think you've made the best choices when hiring and promoting management. The vetting process should be more defined, and less based on "gut" instinct.

I worked at Environmental Systems Design full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Large, high profile projects; offers multiple engineering services; varied project types in several market segments; impressive project portfolio; unique project types; history of creative designs; opportunities for younger staff to advance.

    Cons

Disfunctional senior management is out of touch with the employees; bonuses and promotions based on cronyism instead of performance; has lost a wealth of senior engineers in the past five years without replacing their experience; project quality is inconsistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Brought in two management consultants between 2000 and 2010 but did not follow either firm's advice. Need to either match current senior leadership with their skill sets or go outside of company to bring in qualified leadership with strong communication skills. Company has lost much of the goodwill built by Hem Gupta and Bob Ladner.

I have been working at Environmental Systems Design

    Pros

    Still owned by founder.
Great high profile projects to work on provided you place yourself in the correct groups.
Provided you make the right relationships with people in the company you will be rewarded with projects that you will enjoy working on.
STRONG IT support and investment in upcoming technologies and software.
80% of people you work for will not micro manage you.

    Cons

Work flow is a little scattered. Does not normally come through organized channels. things regularly pop up out of nowhere which could be better planned for but its consulting so you jump when you have to.
Project management tools ie accounting are a little primitive which can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A great company lead by people who are financially rewarded and bound to the success of the company.
Very impressed with company's standing considering how long the company has been in business.
