I have been working at Environmental Systems Design full-time (more than a year)

Pros

ESD receives some of the most diverse and rewarding work. The people I work with day-to day are great. Technical knowledge within the firm is impressive.

Cons

Management could use some work. There isn't a set training schedule for new hires. ESD expects you to learn-as-you-go.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't think you've made the best choices when hiring and promoting management. The vetting process should be more defined, and less based on "gut" instinct.

    A great place to start your career and gain valuable experience in the HVAC design industry

    Cons

    Mismanaged
    Raises and promotions are handled by a committee who have likely never worked with you directly.
    Management will tell you one thing then do nothing.

    I worked at Environmental Systems Design full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Large, high profile projects; offers multiple engineering services; varied project types in several market segments; impressive project portfolio; unique project types; history of creative designs; opportunities for younger staff to advance.

    Cons

    Disfunctional senior management is out of touch with the employees; bonuses and promotions based on cronyism instead of performance; has lost a wealth of senior engineers in the past five years without replacing their experience; project quality is inconsistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Brought in two management consultants between 2000 and 2010 but did not follow either firm's advice. Need to either match current senior leadership with their skill sets or go outside of company to bring in qualified leadership with strong communication skills. Company has lost much of the goodwill built by Hem Gupta and Bob Ladner.
