Current Employee - Project Manager in Palo Alto, CA
Current Employee - Project Manager in Palo Alto, CA

I have been working at Epsilon as a contractor (less than an year)

Pros

SolutionSet was a very smooth operation; professionally organized teams of Account Managers, designers and engineers. They had a high quality roster of clients. At the time I contracted, there was a Palo Alto office and a San Francisco office.

Cons

SolutionSet had high profile clients, but due to the structure of the company, it seemed likely that there was a lot of overhead - possibly resulting in less budget to execute projects. Their strength leaned more on the Engineering side, contracting out some creative.

I have been working at Epsilon full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Career growth & advancement opportunities are everywhere
    Very fast paced dynamic environment
Ability to influence technology decisions at the project and enterprise levels
Ability to work on products, client projects, or corporate projects

    Cons

Must manage work-life balance because of company growth. There is always more project work to do, so you must manage your time.
Company growth rate and reorganizations cause some confusion. Finding the right person(s) to talk to across business units and locations can be tricky.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase amount of time employees have for self directed innovation and improvement work. Some groups are having early success with a formal version of this; roll it out to the entire organization.

Former Employee - Director in Wakefield, MA

I worked at Epsilon full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

*There are some really smart people who are great to work with.
*A lot of flexibility in schedule and telecommuting isn't an issue (depending somewhat on your direct supervisor)
*the work is challenging, and in most cases there is a lot of collaboration across project teams and business groups

    Cons

*almost impossible to change career paths within the organization
*significant cultural differences between US offices which can result in disparate work ethics and one group feeling that they pick up the slack for another
    *terrible health insurance
*disconnect between what is sold and what really needs to be delivered, which results in very long hours for the project team
*little regard for the institutional knowledge of long-time employees. Very much a "what have you done for me lately" environment, in which people get let go regardless of their contribution, to meet a bottom line financial promise. Then new, less expensive replacements are brought in.
*if you're not a favorite of senior management, forget about advancing
*always willing to push a product to market before it is ready, and usually before a support model is in place.
*very focused on the bottom line and short-sighted in building loyalty among employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop telling employees how valuable they are and show them - through career opportunities, better recognition, and through respecting their ideas, their commitment, and their potential. Sr management likes to brag about how great the employees are, but the bulk of the people working there feel extremely undervalued. Walk down a hall of cubicles/offices and more than half of the people there are truly miserable.
