I worked at Equilar

Pros

Opportunity to take on a lot of responsibility
Lots of energetic and fun co-workers
Lots of interesting things to learn each day

Cons

Since it's the first job for many employees, some unrealistic expectations of other co-workers.
I wish this job was in SF and not on the Peninsula

Advice to ManagementAdvice

It was a fun two years and glad I started my career off on the right foot here.

    I worked at Equilar

    Pros

Growing company that has never had layoffs.
    Strongest products in market.
Very good reputation with writers and newspapers.
Little bureaucracy - move very fast to get things done.
    Strong research machine.
    Clients loved them.
CEO is very smart and dedicated but has a bad internal reputation.
Loan program for buying a place (not enough money though in the bay area).

    Cons

Low end of pay at every level. Have overheard managers talk about how little they get paid too.
Very strict expectation of working hours with almost no flexibility.
Micro management to the extreme - no gmail, no even looking at your cell phone, everything we do on our computer is monitored including e-mails.
Revolving door for employees and managers - don't know if they quit or get fired but there's always a nice story.
Opportunity for advancement comes mostly from people leaving.
Not a single person has ever say "I love my job here."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to be a place that people will think of building a long-term career at, provide more flexibility for balance.

I have been working at Equilar

    Pros

If you like disciplined environment, this is the place to work. Usually programmers in bay area has to work odd hours when working for newer companies. This is not the case with Equilar as work is very well managed. It is a fast-paced environment and all employees are enthusiastic about making the place better. There are free fruits/snacks. Frequent free lunches. Lots of events like Go-karting, summer activities, holiday party. We have a TV and Wii at office. There are quarterly magazines published within the company by employees. My favorite are monthly company meetings where every department gives a presentation about the plans and progress.

    Cons

I would like to change the layout of the office, but something is being planned towards that. I cannot think of any other cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try to retain the good people even at the cost of higher flexibility. But too much flexibility can spoil the disciplined culture.
