As a knowledgable trainer, it makes you question our industry

    I worked at Equinox Fitness

    Pros

    - Of all the commercial gyms, it pays the most
    - High-net worth clients
    - It could be worse — I could've worked at LA Fitness or 24.

    Cons

    - I met a lot of trainers who didn't know their shoulder from their as*hole and were all-in-all morons at their job. I felt bad for their clients.
    - There's a lot of favoritism when it comes to handing leads; none of which has *anything* to do with "ability to train," "knowledge," or "program-design skills."
    - It's hard to get fired. Yes, this is a "con" — people who display gross negligence will never leave.
    - The company values the dollar over the client.
    - And much much more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

VALUE your best employees. They're not the slickest salesmen or the most-buff individual — they're the person who works hard at being the best trainer, studies the most resources, and shows a talent for helping their client.

Pilates? Think Long and Hard before working here.

I worked at Equinox Fitness full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Nice studios
    Diverse group of instructors
Discounted membership for Spouse or Partner
Nice club to work out in

    Cons

When you are offered the Pilates Coordinator position they say that it's part time. Ha! It's full time and you're told "whatever it takes to make goal". It doesn't matter if you are understaffed or membership is down. Here's the kicker you do management duties but they don't call you that. You will also make 10-12 dollars less than the Training Managers. Never mind the fact that you've done over 700 hrs just to get your certification. You will get paid 925.00 each pay check for Coordinator in addition to your training hours. However you can't train that many clients because you will be doing admin. work and scheduling for all the other instructors. Your training rate is 46.50 for a private while the training managers for personal training will be paid 56.00 per hour and 52.00 per hour. As far as instructors rates go it's 30.00/hr for Junior, 37.00 for Mezzo, and 42.00 for Senior. You will be expected to do emails, and front desk hours and "events" to increase Pilates visibility for a mere 8.00 per hour. You will be asked to email members who never did their comps in the hopes they will buy. You will have to do monthly projections saying what how many people you think you'll convert. If you are willing to hustle to get clients than you will be fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take Pilates seriously. There are forums and all kinds of education for personal trainers but the only thing Pilates gets are sales meetings.
