Wonderful to begin with. Exhausting and demoralizing at the end.

I worked at Esri full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great campus, great ideals, opportunity for freedom to work your own way, many good people. Can be great pay if the quirky pay by hour system is played well.

Cons

Bad politics caused by Jack's "management by chaos" theories. Hypocrisy - if you're going to market yourself as a "doing good" company, best the internal attitudes mirror that - they don't. Arrogance - to staff, to non-worshipping users, and to anyone who "doesn't get it". Awful HR... (and the fact that there are two HR departments at war with each other is not good)... just stone age attitudes to motivation. Absolutely no possibility of promotion or sideways moves. Jack is a great guy... but all this is on his watch. I can no longer approve of his continued leadership of this company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a professional company CEO; appoint a visionary CTO, bring in a dynamic COO... and replace both HR departments in entirety. Read Good to Great by Jim Collins... and follow his advice.

I have been working at Esri

    Pros

    Good insurance and benefit package
Flexible working schedule and working from home allowed
Less pressure than most other software company

    Cons

Esri doesn't have a challenging enough working environment so employees feel competitive
Salary a little lower than average major software company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management structure is too flat to motivate employees to improve themselves and stand out. Moving between different teams or departments are not easy.

    I worked at Esri

    Pros

The ESRI campus is built into a well forested and relaxing area of Redlands. The people have a very family like level of concern and the level of pressure within the organization is not very high. Jack is an AMAZING guy, period.

    Cons

The atmosphere is very relaxed. They are very degree centered and that poses a problem for people who might slip between the cracks. If they are ever noticed due to government requirements they will be dismissed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more instruction when you see projects moving off the desired path or slipping past deadlines. Move faster to correct issues. Provide more mentoring.
