I worked at Ethan Allen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For retail furniture company, compensation is pretty good in comparison. Compensate for miles.

    Cons

They ask you to give away your design services. Clients would take your service more seriously if they had to pay for it. There is definitely a difference between what is really happening and what the CEO knows. People in CT do not care to get feedback from the store level. Ask what we need not what they think will work. Really tough to make enough money to prosper. Constant change of upper management, people getting fired. It's been VERY ugly. Lots of busy work constantly contacting clients.

    Advice to Management

Everyone in the company who makes decisions about the direction of the product or the "tools" that are used by the designers, should have to spend some time on the floor seeing how those things work. For example, the beautiful "new" hanging fabric samples: Because they are now folded in half they are harder to fold for use in a presentation. They also only have one point of contact with velcro, so now all the velcro has torn off and it looks a mess. Tags should be in some sort of order so it is not impossible to find the correct ones when tagging floor. Information should be updated on a timely basis. Next time you get a new software system try buying something that is current. If you have contemporary frames, you should have contemporary fabric to put on them.
