Pros

Give a lot experience and responsibility to very inexperienced people. If you don't survive, you get thrown away-- learn early, this (I know it seems odd but this is a positive). Amazing place to learn -- especially by experience. Company culture has always been to hire mavericks rather than grad trainees (though there are a lot of trainees). Good camaraderie among the journalists.

Cons

Rare for editors to make leap to management successfully so in the absence of proper skills, there is often an issue of bullying to junior staff as the middle management set and try to achieve targets that are unrealistic. In some of the more profitable titles the culture is idiosyncratic and unpleasant. Management decisions can be haphazard, ill-conceived. Pay is low even when an editor.

Advice to Management

Middle management — sort yourself out. Bullying isn't the place for a 21st century outfit, however, big.
