    I have been working at Evertec

    Pros

    Puerto Rico has a 16% unemployment rate. EVERTEC is not financially stable, due to a $500 million debt due to its leveraged buyout, however it has a solid net income with a positive trend and a lot of clients both in government and different private sector industries.

    Cons

    It is a really negative working environment with a lot of gossip and political game playing at work. Career advancement and salary raises are not merit based, but on the contrary, depends on who you are friends with. There is no life/work balance and EVERTEC expects that all its technicians, analysts, supervisors and lower management working on the IT area to be available 7 x 24. Even though EVERTEC has a 24 hour operation and sells the service in this way to external clients, it usually has only one shift for its technical personnel. That means that after the employee finishes his normal 8 to 5 p.m. shift, they can call him at 2 or 3 a.m. to work usually without extra pay, because most employees are exempt. The employees tolerate this because of the high unemployment rate.

    Most power resides in bureaucrats; when a technical problem occurs or when an employee makes a mistake, a witch hunt ensues by a PMB Board. The objective is never to correct the problem, but on the contrary, is to assign blame. If the blame falls on a person or group that is protected because their connections to upper management, the investigation stops and you cannot get any information on the problem status. Otherwise, an employee can be reprimanded, fired or simply publicly blamed, even if the problem root cause was undetermined. Even though EVERTEC is an IT Service company, it does not want to invest money to develop its employees. Most of what we learn, we do so by ourselves, reading and by trial and error. The Human Resources area dedicates its time to try and manipulate employees instead of doing its job in an honest way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Resign. New professional management should be hired. Psychological testing by an external provider should be established to determine if honesty and professionalism are really part of the new talent. Family members should not be allowed as part of the new management or even supervisory levels. An honest employee assessment system must be established and salaries and advancement must be merit based. If you sell 7 x 24 service to your clients, ensure that you have personnel to cover those contracts.
