Lots of opportunities to help the business, but all "growth" is for the company, not the employee.

I have been working at Exelis

Pros

Great People
There are many interesting projects
Diverse Workplace
This is great place for "entry level" employment

Cons

Sr. Leadership is trying rescue the business in a down economy
Small to no merit increases for several years regardless of great performance reviews
Bonuses have been slashed
Strategic decisions are based on stock performance drivers not on the overall health of the business

Advice to Management

Make sure your transformation consultants know what they are doing.

    Pros

There was a good group of people

    Cons

Corprate office was only interested in what immediate effect on wall street would be and not product or customer satisfaction

Used to be a great place to work but the defense downturn and inept senior management soured my experience by the end.

    Pros

The work-life balance was very good if you were in the right group.

Salaries and raises were competitive if you were a top performer although the downturn has likely changed this.

Engineers had a fair amount of autonomy as long as you delivered on time and under budget. There was some variation across the company in regard to this.

    Cons

Senior management did a very bad job of strategizing once the defense downturn started. ITT Exelis has no clue what it is they actually do now.

Job security was very poor in the last few years due to lack of diversification among contracts. Top-performing engineering staff were slammed with furloughs or layoffs without notice while managers kept their jobs.

The benefits package used to be very good but was absolute rubbish by the time I left.

    Advice to Management

Develop a strategy that plans for and accommodates the new defense spending environment. Your inability to do this has caused a huge brain drain in engineering talent because of all of the departures (both voluntary and involuntary) due to lack of contract $. So many top technical staffers have had to leave that it is unclear how you intend to continue developing products to generate a profit.
